Meet Stella Nall

Stella Nall (Bisháakinnesh) is a multidisciplinary artist and First Descendant of the Apsáalooke (Crow) Tribe whose work serves as a vibrant bridge between ancient tradition and contemporary joy. Based in Missoula, Montana, Stella’s practice is an act of "whimsical reverence," utilizing a sprawling range of mediums—from beadwork and wood carving to murals and poetry—to explore the interconnectedness of place, identity, and the natural world.

With a formal background in Printmaking, Psychology, and Art History from the University of Montana, Stella has developed a distinctive visual language defined by intricate mark-making and a fearless use of color. Her work is celebrated for its ability to transform public and private spaces into "place-based narratives," where the local landscape and its inhabitants are honored through a lens of playfulness and deep respect.

Stella’s career has seen her work rise to national prominence, with pieces housed in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian and the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts. Following her acclaimed 2025 solo museum exhibition, Offerings from My Heart, Stella continues to push the boundaries of storytelling, most recently through her 2024 collaboration with the Crow Language Consortium to illustrate the Apsáalooke children’s book, Káale Ihké Shóoke Koolák Baleealoóweeli?

As a Karma Ranch Founding Artist, Stella brings a profound sense of "mending" to our mission. Her work doesn't just decorate a space; it offers a blessing to it. Her participation in the 250-acre sanctuary vision ensures that the spirit of the Montana land and the dignity of the horse are captured with the heart and heritage they deserve.

“My work is a celebration of place-based narratives and the joyful connections that bind us to the land and each other.”

A Vision of Reverence

We are profoundly honored to announce that Founding Artist Stella Nall is creating an original work exclusively for our March 17th Kickstarter launch. Drawing from her Apsáalooke heritage and her deep connection to the Montana landscape, Stella is crafting a piece that serves as an "offering" to the sanctuary and its residents. This exclusive artwork will be available as a premier reward for our Founding Stewards, representing a rare opportunity to own a piece of contemporary history from one of Montana’s most vital artistic voices. By securing this work, you are directly investing in the soul and infrastructure of our 250-acre sanctuary, helping us create a place of permanent healing. Mark your calendars for March 17th—this is your chance to bring Stella’s "whimsical reverence" into your home while helping us build a legacy of dignity for the herd.
