Cosmos: A New Beginning for a Forgotten Boy

The Auction Floor: March 14, 2026

They say some things are meant to be, and on a cold March afternoon, the universe aligned for one little Appaloosa colt.

Cosmos stood on the auction floor, a number on his tail and a question mark over his future. As the auctioneer called out, the room went silent. No one bid. The price started to drop lower and lower, reflecting a world that didn't see his value. But we saw him. We stepped up, placed the first and final bid of $350, and with no one standing against us, Cosmos officially became the first member of the Karma Ranch family.

The Burden He Carried

Cosmos arrived with more than just a past; he arrived with physical pain. His feet were severely neglected, making every step a struggle. Even more urgent was a visible, protruding umbilical hernia. Within days of his arrival, we provided his first professional trim, giving him a level foundation for the first time in his life. But the biggest hurdle was yet to come.

The Surgery: April 9, 2026

On April 9, Cosmos was transported to Mountain Point Equine Hospital. What we thought was a standard procedure revealed a much more dangerous reality: Cosmos was living with a four-finger hernia.

Why the Surgery Saved His Life

A hernia of this size is a "ticking time bomb." In horses, an unrepaired hernia runs a constant risk of strangulation, where a loop of the intestine slips through the opening and becomes trapped. This leads to a loss of blood supply, excruciating pain, and is almost always fatal without immediate, high-cost emergency intervention. By repairing it now, we didn't just fix a "bump"—we removed the greatest threat to his life.

The Soul of a Survivor

Despite the neglect and the major surgery, Cosmos has proven to be one of the sweetest souls we’ve ever encountered. He is brave, curious, and incredibly gentle. Whether he’s recovering in his suite or greeting us for his morning check-ins, his personality shines through his Appaloosa spots. He doesn't hold his past against anyone; he is simply ready to be loved.

A Future Without Fences

Today, Cosmos is healing. He is no longer a "discard" or a "number." He is a pioneer of the Movement is Medicine philosophy. Because of the community that stood behind him, Cosmos will grow up to run across the 250 acres of Karma Ranch. He will never know hunger, neglect, or the fear of an auction floor ever again.

Cosmos is home. Forever.

Your Support Turned His Last Day Into Day One

When we stood at that auction on March 14th, Cosmos’s future was a question mark.

Today, because of this incredible community, his future is a promise. You didn't just fund a surgery; you funded his ability to run, to heal, and to eventually join our 250-acre sanctuary.

Every dollar was a vote for his life, and I am eternally grateful to be the one who gets to watch him grow because of you.

The Guardians of Cosmos

The Village That Saved a Life

They say it takes a village to raise a child, but in the rescue world, it takes a 'herd' to save a soul. When Cosmos stood on that auction floor with neglected feet and a life-threatening injury, he was invisible to the world-but he wasn't invisible to you.

Because of your generosity, 'impossible' became 'healed.' You provided the surgery he needed, the specialized recovery suite he thrives in, and the peace of mind I needed to stay on watch.

Below are the names of the Guardians who didn't just donate; you gave Cosmos his first real breath of freedom.

I am eternally grateful
