Aurora & Astro

A Story written

in the Stars

On March 14th, 2026, a completely unhandled, feral (maybe wild) mare named Aurora was rescued from a livestock auction where she was at imminent risk of entering the slaughter pipeline. For horses like her—starving, wild, and untouched by humans—most people simply don't step in. She entered our care with a heartbreaking body condition score of just 1.5. Knowing her fragile state, Karma Ranch founder Noelle embarked on a grueling, around-the-clock foal watch that lasted for 89 straight nights, providing specialized nutrition and absolute quiet until Aurora finally felt safe enough to nest.

The long nights of waiting culminated in pure magic on June 13th at 1:00 AM, when Aurora brought a healthy, strong baby boy into the world: Astro. True to his feral genetics, Astro has quickly developed a brilliant, fearless, and budding personality, taking in the world with total confidence.

But the most miraculous part of Astro’s arrival is written in the stars. Astro was born a stunning buckskin Appaloosa—a beautiful, full-circle nod to the very beginning of Karma Ranch, which started with the rescue of our first buckskin, Jupiter. From the edge of the slaughter pipeline to a lifetime of safety, Aurora and Astro are living proof of what patience, choice-based love, and a true sanctuary can do.
