Meet Sean Falcon Chandler
Sean Falcon Chandler (Aaniiih) is a profound contemporary artist whose work explores the complexities of identity, history, and the reclamation of self. Based in Montana, Sean’s practice is rooted in the philosophy of the Aaniiih people and a lifelong journey of redefining what it means to be "free" in a contemporary world. His art is a visceral dialogue between his own lived experiences and a century of ancestral history, touching on themes of invisibility and the ultimate power of self-definition.
Sean’s work is characterized by a "layered" approach—both physically and metaphorically—using a blend of traditional and modern influences to hide and reveal truths behind masks of men, women, and creatures. His paintings are not just visual experiences; they are acts of resistance and a tribute to his father’s teachings on being in control of one’s own destiny.
A titan of the contemporary art world and a pillar of his community, Sean currently serves as the President of Aaniiih Nakoda College. His work has earned a place in some of the most prestigious institutions in the world, with pieces held in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), the Museum of Natural History in Paris (France) the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Missoula Art Museum, and the Yellowstone Art Museum.
As a Karma Ranch Founding Artist, Sean brings a necessary gravity to our mission. His exploration of what it means to be a "free human being" perfectly mirrors the sanctuary’s goal of returning sovereignty to the herd. On our 250-acre Montana sanctuary, Sean’s art serves as a reminder that healing begins when we are finally free to define our own future.
"I think of the Aaniiih Philosophy of being in control of my own destiny to be prosperous and generous... the freedom to be a 'free' human being."
-Sean Chandler

The Indian boarding school educational system. Holding him back while the rest have the freedom to advance. A system that allowed him to hand in the same assignment year after year about the book, The Black Stallion. Somehow through it all while holding onto his grandfather’s teachings, becomes prosperous and generous.

The regret of wasted time and missed opportunities. Maybe a guy that led his life with self-doubt of his own making and from others questioning his own dreams. Maybe seeking guidance from himself, he might have lived his dreams. But in the end, maybe it was all supposed to end up like this…which might turn out to not be that bad.
